iScibble: '12~'13 Fullboards by zuqling iScibble: '12~'13 Fullboards by zuqling
these are stuff done in the full iScribble canvas.. it's really fun and fast to work in there, as compared to working on a big intimidating photoshop file.
I draw fanart because that way I don't worry about character design, and focus on the scene, colour and layout. I probably will suck as an original concept artist so I'll instead work on my illustration skills ' c'

iScribble friends will complain that these are all old drawings, so I'm sorry

I friggin' LOVE your iScribble paintings. I can never put my finger on what strikes me as so fascinating about them, it's always a variety of feelings meshing together into one overall feeling of awe. The compositions and colors are always really wonderful.

I think I like 'em a lot too because they're done in a way that makes them look like small-scale, traditionally done oil paintings or something. Like, the brushstrokes are digital, but the way you pull it together really imitates a 3-dimensional, physical texture displayed from a 2-dimensional flat computer screen.

It's kinda funny how things play out cause I hadn't picked up oil painting until recently, and when I was all 'fyeah-finally-real-oil-paint' I realized how not similar those two mediums are. It was almost impossible for me to create a satisfactory painting in oil unless used in impasto, then I realized that the approach/technique can't be ported over cause that shit takes forever to dry. FUCK. A real inconvenience it was, and I admire them oil painters twenty times over now :U

Thank you always for your encouragement Tal, it's like a happy drug that gets my engine running :iconawwyeahplz:

Oh my god, I knooooow. I have no patience for it. I'm acrylic all the way, unless I'm painting a portrait or just something that requires a lot of blending like skin or something, so then I'll cross over here and there when it's most convenient hahah.

Lawd, I haven't painted in so long though. o_o

And you're welcome! Seeing your art is the drung that gets my engine running so it's just like a giant cycle of inspiration. Haha

that scene is something of my own invention.. It was for a comic set in alternate England where this 'inspector gadget' bobby solves mysteries with a sidekick from somewhere, but it never really materialized.
thank you for your encouragement! (;

Where did you learn this colouring technique and what would you say would be the best place / way to learn? The character designs seem quite inspired as well.

hmm... I think I really 'got into' colours through the online paint chat applet during my years on iScribble. It's only a small canvas per board, about 700x376 pixels, with limited capabilities such as zoom, 3 sized brushes(solid circles) and 3 layers with no undo. But it also features an 'area picker' tool which is like the 5x5 eyedropper tool in Photoshop, but only more intuitive cause of the hotkey bindings.

With these limitations, I can easily focus on colour and form rather than paint application(like brush textures, etc). I used to watch the better artists drawing, and you can see live their paint process which is great! I was there practically everyday to chat and draw with people, and I experimented alot with colour. Coming from the black and white realm, it was intimidating at first, but you know, with failures and some breakthroughs you start to grasp a little.. then I researched realistic lighting and colour and so really started to understand how things work.

(I recommend James Gurney, jamesgurney.com/site/213/color…, which is more catered to traditional painting but the studies applies across all mediums
and this page, androidarts.com/art_tut.htm )

It goes without saying that my technique developed through the years of practice and study. I don't think there's a 'best way' to learn, but there are methods suitable to what you're aiming to accomplish. I learnt colouring application through doing many small drawings and watching people paint. But I learn how to use lighting techniques through breaking down people's art, photographs and then applying in more drawings, etc. You need to know what you want to improve, and then focus on that one aspect instead of trying to do too many things at once.

But I think, as a general advice.. have friends who can draw with you (; They propel your interest and motivate you to draw more, and have fun at the same time.

Oh and, about character designs.. other than the second painting, all the rest are existing characters from games and anime.. I don't have a lot of 'original characters' so I simply use stuff I liked to keep me from sticking in a rut.

Hope that helped you, if you think you'd like to draw with me maybe we could arrange some art jam sessions in iScribble x)

Thanks for the comprehensive reply! Sounds like some good advice. I'll definitely look into the links as well. And I definitely was talking about the second pic with regards to character design. If I knew what time you were drawing live, I'd watch that. Never used iScribble before though. I think I'd be embarrassed to draw alongside you though, haha.

Have you watched the film, and the Stand Alone Complex anime series? Kusanagi had very different personalities in both.. there I think I drew her in an outfit found in the anime series, but with a srs face of the film, haha!

I have seen both, and also Second Gig. Huge fan *U*

I like to think that in the series she's different because her persona has been enlarged by absorbing the puppetmaster into her ghost, basically. Of course, they never talk about whether it's canon or not so... Who knows? LOL

OH, AND THAT KINDA MAKES SENSE?! I mean.. I always assumed they were portrayed differently 'cause they're not necessarily the same 'Kusanagi'. Hmmm!
